Verse

321   The price shall increase with more years before the next Jubilee and

          decrease with fewer years.

322  You shall have respect for one another in your dealings.

            The “you” is singular.  This may be a general rule, but in this context it is for the Jubilee year.

Levi. 25:17

323   The land shall never be sold in perpetuity.

             The land must be returned to its original possessor during each Jubilee year.

324   The laws pertaining to redemption of the land must be obeyed.

325   The laws pertaining to dwellings in walled and unwalled cities must be

          obeyed.

326   Houses of the Levites, in a walled city or not, shall always be redeemable

          by them.

327   Any house of the Levites shall be released in the Jubilee year.

             The house of a Levite always returns to him in the Jubilee year.

328   The open country of the Levites shall not be sold.

329   If your relative becomes too poor to support himself, you shall take him in.

             The “you” is singular.  This is a general commandment to all who have relatives who might be

             poor.

330   You shall take no interest or profit from him while he lives with you.

331   If your relative sells himself to you, you shall not employ him as a

         bondservant.

             The “your” and two instances of “you” are singular.

332   He shall be as a hired hand or a sojourner with you.

333   He shall be restored, he and his children, to his possession in the Jubilee

          year.

335   You shall buy bondservants only from the nations around you or the

          foreigners sojourning with you.

337   An Israelite who sells himself to a sojourner shall be redeemed by his

          relative or by himself.

338   He shall be as a hired servant with the stranger in your eyes.

             The “your” is singular.  The congregation is responsible for making sure he is well treated.

Levi. 25:53

339   If he is not redeemed, he shall be released in the Jubilee year.

Levi. 25:54

340   You shall estimate the value of  vows of souls dedicated to the Lord.

341   The procedures and statutes pertaining to dedicated things shall be

          followed.

Levi. 27:9-33

342   Unclean men or women shall be excluded from the congregation.

             While the children of Israel were in the wilderness, this meant there had to be a place set aside

             outside the camp for the unclean.  In the case of women, this could be for a period of up to three

             weeks.  So the facilities had to be rather extensive.  Furthermore, the facilities had to be

             protected from predators, both animal and human.  A continuous guard had to be maintained.

             When the children of Israel were in Israel, a place had to be set aside outside every city, town,

             village, or camp.  When an army was encamped for a battle or siege, a facility was required for

             the soldiers outside their camp.  Guards would have been necessary to patrol these facilities, at

             least at night.

Numb. 5:2,3

343   Should a man or woman transgress grievously, he or she shall confess

          the sin.

             The priest would receive the confession.

Numb. 5:6,7

344   The man shall make restitution with a fifth over to the wronged one.

             This verse and the next apply to sins against another Israelite, not against God.  Yom Kippur

             serves the latter purpose.

345   And if there might be no kinsman for the person to whom to recompense

          the guilt, the guilt restitution shall be for the Lord, for the priest.

346   The priest shall follow the procedures pertaining to jealousy and the

          cursing water of bitterness.

Numb. 5:12-31

347   If a man or woman swears a Nazirite oath, he/she and the priest shall

          follow the laws of the Nazarite.

348   The priests shall bless the children of Israel daily with the threefold

          blessing.

Numb. 6:23-26

349   The Levites shall be dedicated to the Lord in place of the first born of the

          children of Israel.

            This commandment is the justification for a Jew’s ability to redeem his first-born son.

350   There shall be a plague among the children of Israel if any of them comes

          close to the Tabernacle/Temple sanctuary.

351   A Levite shall serve in the tent of meeting/Temple from age twenty-five up

          to age fifty.

352   After age fifty, a Levite may be only an observer in the tent of meeting/

          Temple.

353   One who is unclean shall still prepare the paschal lamb and eat it with

          unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

            This is to be followed after he becomes clean.  See the next three commandments.

Numb.9:10,11

354   One who is too far from the Temple must still prepare the paschal lamb and

          eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

             This is the reason we modern Jews have to modify the observance of Passover -- the Temple is

             too far away.

355   They shall prepare it on the fourteenth day of the second month at dusk.

356   They shall do it according to all the statutes of the Passover.

             Except it shall be only for one day!  Passover may still be observed in the first month for seven

Numb.9:12

357   The soul of one who is clean and close to the Temple and does not

          observe the Passover shall be cut off from its people.

Numb.9:13

358   You shall make two trumpets of silver that the priests shall keep.

             The number of the “you” in this verse, although singular, is insignificant, because the

             commandment was given directly to Moses by the Lord.  See the next commandment to

             understand why the number of this commandment is not colored.

Numb.10:2

359   The priests shall blow on the trumpets to call the congregation.

             The number of this commandment is not colored.  Here’s why:  If you’ve read my views on

             Judaism (rubinhood.org), you know that I believe priests should run synagogues.  And they

             should follow this commandment to start each service.

360   The priests shall blow on one trumpet to call the chiefs.

Numb.10:3

361   When going to war, an alarm shall be sounded by the priests on the

          trumpets.

362   The priests shall blow the trumpets over the sacrifices and peace offerings

          in the appointed seasons and new moons.

363   When you eat you shall offer a gift to the Lord.

Numb.15:19

364   From the first of your dough you shall offer a cake to the Lord.

             This is the gift.  It was given to the priests.  Nowadays a blessing is to be said during or after

             eating in lieu of a gift.

365   You shall make a fringe on the corners of your garments.5

             In biblical times the fringe was put on the corners of a tunic, if worn, or on the corners of a robe

             or skirt.  Orthodox Jews wear a special vest, called a tallit katan (small tallit), to which fringes

             are attached on each of the four corners.

367   The priests shall always bear the iniquity of the sanctuary.

368   The priests shall always bear the iniquity of the priesthood.

369   The Levites may not come close to the furnishings of the holy place or to

          the altar during their service.

             This commandment refers to all that was in the tent:  The ark, the veil, the incense altar, the

             candlestick, and the show bread table; as well as the sacrificial altar.  The same for the Temple.

             It is literal -- during their service is the critical stipulation.  Since they were to carry all of the

             Tabernacle, its furnishings, and its utensils, everything had to be packed up and covered by the

             priests before the Israelites could pick up their camp.

Numb.18:3

370   The dedicated portions of every sin offering, guilt offering, meal offering,

          wave offering, and the first fruits from the children of Israel shall belong to

          the priests.

371   The wave offering and the first fruits may be eaten by all members of the

          priests' households.

Numb.18:11-13

372   You shall redeem the first born male of the children of Israel and the first

          born male of an unclean beast.

             The “you” is singular.  This is addressed to the whole of Israel.

373   You shall not redeem the first born of any of your clean farm animals.

             The “you” and the “your” are singular.  This is also addressed to the whole of Israel.

Numb.18:17

374   The priests shall have no inheritance in Israel.

Numb.18:20

375   The tithe of the children of Israel shall be for the Levites.

Numb.18:21

376   The Levites shall have no inheritance among the children of Israel.

Numb.18:23

377   The Levites shall tithe from their tithe to the priests.

Numb.18:26-28

378   The Levites and their households may eat the tithe anywhere.

379   The priest shall perform the procedure of the red heifer.

             The oldest son of the High Priest is responsible for carrying out this commandment.  But what

             if a future priest were to have no male children?  It seems expedient that the High Priest would

             then name another priest to fulfill this commandment.

380   The laws of impurity pertaining to the dead shall be observed.

381   You shall follow the order of inheritance.

             The “you” is plural.

Numb. 27:8-11

382   You shall bring the prescribed offerings of the Sabbath, new moon,

          Passover, and Shavuot.

             The “you” is plural.

Numb. 28:3-31

383   You shall bring the prescribed offerings for the first of Tishrei, 10th of

         Tishrei, Sukkoth, and Sh’mini Atzeret.

             The “you” is plural.

Numb. 29:2-38

384   The statutes pertaining to vows and oaths shall be obeyed.

385   The statutes governing cities for the Levites shall be obeyed.

             The implied “you” is plural.

             The two instances of “you” ar plural.  No Jew may add anything to these words.

391   You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might.

             The “you” and “your” are singular.  Israel must love the Lord.

Deut. 6:5

392   The commandments shall be on your heart.

             The “your” is singular.  Symbolically, the commandments must be on Israel’s heart.

Deut. 6:6

393   You shall teach the commandments to your children.

             The “you” and “your” are singular.  Israel must see to it that every Jewish child is taught the

             commandments.

Deut. 6:7

394   You shall speak of the commandments all day while not working.

             The “you” is singular.  Israel must speak of the commandments all day every day.

Deut. 6:7

395   You shall bind the commandments for a sign on your hand.

             The “you” and “your” are singular.  In other words, Israel must symbolically bind the

             commandments as a sign on her hand.  By ignoring the number of the pronouns, the rabbis have

             mistakenly commanded that phylacteries must be worn by every male Jew six mornings a

             week.

Deut. 6:8

396   The commandments shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

             The “you” and “your” are singular.  In other words, Israel must symbolically wear the

             commandments as frontlets between her eyes.

397   You shall write the commandments on the door posts of your house and

          on your gates.

             The “you” and two instances of “your” are singular.  In other words, Israel must symbolically

             write the commandments on the door posts of her house and on her gates.  The mezuzah

             serves this purpose.

Deut. 6:9

398   You shall serve the Lord.

             The “you” is singular.  Israel shall serve the Lord.  This statement can be taken as both a

             commandment and a prophecy.  As a prophecy, it says that whether we like it or not, Israel will

             serve the Lord.

Deut. 6:13

399   You shall swear by the Lord's name.

             The “you” is singular.  Israel shall swear by the Lord’s name.  This statement can be taken as

             both a commandment and a prophecy.  As a prophecy, it says that whether we intend to or

             not, Israel will swear by the Lord’s name (and by no other).

Deu 19:1-3

400   You shall not test the Lord.

             Another plural “you!”  This commandment and the next, taken together, mean that we are not

             to question the Lord, which is contrary to traditional belief.
